Travel is revered as a hallowed, life-changing experience, but that’s not always the case! Here is the truth about travel that no one tells you:
You can do it without leaving the country — You’d be surprised how many amazing things there are to see and do in your own state or country. You don’t have to go overseas to “travel”. It doesn’t have to cost a fortune or take you to exotic places. Just going to the next state over can be a great experience!
It doesn’t guarantee happiness — Most of us have this notion that we’re always happy while on vacation. Maybe we are, but that has more to do with the “no work” than the traveling. If you’re dissatisfied with your life, that dissatisfaction will still be there when you get home.
It can be a hassle — Think about getting to and from the airport, sitting in a cramped plane, queuing up for Customs and Immigration lines, trying to talk to people who don’t speak any English, or having your luggage lost or stolen. It’s not all roses and sunshine!
It doesn’t make you a savvy person — We tend to look at world travelers differently, as if they’re somehow smarter or more successful than us. That’s not the case! Travel does give you a greater understanding of the world at large, but it’s not a metric to determine your success or intelligence.
It’s expensive — Even if you travel on a budget, you spend WAY more money than you would in your regular life. You spend on hotels, food, transportation, activities, and the list goes on. You’ve spent all year working just to save up enough money for your travels. Does that sound smart to you?
Despite it all, travel is a WONDERFUL experience, one that everyone should try at least once in their lives.
